It’s considered rude to ask a woman her age and queen bees are no exception. So, beekeepers have devised a way to identify them by marking them with a colour that coincides with the year they were born. Our resident beekeeper used a 3D printer to make a temporary cage to hold our queen in place so he could put a small yellow dot on her back. Bees born in years ending in zero are blue, 1 are white, 2 yellow, 3 red, and 4 green. This is also helpful when trying to find the queen in and amongst all the worker bees during hive inspections. So, how do all the other bees feel about marking their queen? After we put the dot on her back they tried relentlessly to clean it off. Luckily the marker we used was a lot like your age; permanent.
